The podcast may end when the episode is over, but the conversation doesn’t have to.
The First Responder Reset Community is a private Facebook group for first responders and others in high-stress careers who want practical conversations and resources around sleep, fatigue, burnout, trauma, wellness, relationships, and life outside the job.
It’s a place to continue the conversations we start on the podcast, connect with others who understand the realities of high-stress work, and access additional education, tools, resources, and episode discussions.
What Is First Responder Reset?
Practical conversations about what the job does to you—and how to stay well while doing it.
First Responder Reset is a mental health and wellness podcast created for first responders and others working in high-stress careers who understand how easy it is to stay operational at work while struggling to shut it off when the shift is over.
Hosted by Amie Peterson, LMHC, an EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist and first responder mental health specialist, the podcast explores the realities of sleep deprivation, fatigue, burnout, trauma, and wellness across the career lifespan.
The goal isn't simply to talk about what's wrong. It's to help you understand why your brain and body respond the way they do, what years of high-stress work can change, and what you can actually do about it.
Overcome Work Burnout So You Can Shut Off the Job
You may be great at handling the call, making the decision, taking care of the patient, managing the scene, or getting through the shift.
The harder part can be what happens afterward.
When your body is home but your brain is still at work. When you're exhausted but can't sleep. When your patience is shorter, your family notices you've changed, or years of pushing through start catching up with you.
First Responder Reset helps you understand what's happening beneath the surface and gives you practical strategies to protect your mental health, relationships, sleep, and career longevity—without asking you to become less capable of doing the job.
Why This Podcast Is Different
This isn't generic mental health advice repackaged for first responders.
The conversations on First Responder Reset are grounded in trauma science, clinical experience, and an understanding of first responder and high-stress professional culture. Episodes translate the psychology behind trauma, sleep, fatigue, burnout, relationships, stress, and operational wellness into practical information you can actually use.
No clinical jargon you have to decode. No pretending the answer is simply to “practice more self-care.”
Just real conversations about staying well in careers that ask a lot from the people who do them.
What We Talk About
First Responder Reset explores the challenges that can follow you throughout a high-stress career—and what helps you stay well both on and off the job.
Each episode fits within three core areas of first responder mental health and wellness:
Build a Career You Can Survive
Operational Wellness • Sleep Deprivation • Fatigue • Burnout • Career Sustainability
Learn what years of shift work, disrupted sleep, chronic stress, high responsibility, and repeated exposure can do to your brain and body—and what you can do to protect your health and stay effective throughout your career.
From sleep deprivation and fatigue to burnout and operational wellness, these episodes focus on practical strategies for staying well in careers that rarely slow down.
Heal From the Calls That Stick
Trauma • PTSD • Critical Incidents • Cumulative Trauma • Hypervigilance
Some experiences stay with you long after the call, scene, patient, or shift is over. Others build gradually after years of seeing, hearing, and carrying things most people never have to experience.
These episodes break down trauma, PTSD, cumulative occupational exposure, critical incidents, hypervigilance, and the calls that stick—including why certain experiences affect you differently and what can help your brain process what happened.
Reconnect Beyond the Badge
Marriage • Family • Relationships • Parenting • Life Outside the Job
The job doesn't only affect the person doing it. Long shifts, exhaustion, hypervigilance, emotional shutdown, irritability, and the habit of compartmentalizing can follow you home and affect the people closest to you.
These episodes focus on marriage, family, parenting, communication, connection, and transitioning from work to home—so being good at the job doesn't have to come at the expense of your life outside of it.
I especially like this because your five main podcast keywords now appear naturally across the section:
Sleep Deprivation • Fatigue • Burnout • Trauma • Wellness

Learn why your brain can stay in operational mode after the shift is over, what's actually happening beneath the surface, and why “just relax” usually isn't enough to switch it off.
If One Call Keeps Following You
Episode 4: The Calls That Stick With You: Trauma Nobody Talks About
Start here if there’s a call, scene, patient, case, or experience that keeps coming back—or if you’ve wondered why one call can affect you differently than hundreds of others.
